Whirling Dervishes Show

Most people are familiar with Turkey's Whirling Dervishes show, but few are aware of their long past or the meaning of their whirling. As a member of Sufism and the Mevlevi Order, they have a tradition dating back over 700 years.

As a kind of dhikr, the Dervishes ‘whirl' in these 7th-century performances. These performances started as a weekly remembrance of God, attended by the entire Mevlevi communities. The dervishes' white robe represents the funeral robe, and their turban represents the human ego's tombstone. They arrive on stage wearing black cardigans, which represent the crypt, which they remove before beginning to whirl. Abdülmecit was the first person to reside in Dolmabahce Palace and to conduct official business there. Abdülaziz, Abdulmecit's brother, lived in this palace after him. Dolmabahce Palace is significant for the Turkish nation since it is where Mustafa Kemal Ataturk died. In Istanbul, it was also used as Ataturk's presidential residence.
