What is the Istanbul Museum Pass, and do I need to buy one? Many people who are planning to visit the Turkish metropolis are asking this question. In Istanbul, there are two types of Museum Pass that you can buy for your visit. One of them is owned and offered by the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the another one is offered by authorized travel agents.

If you're planning a visit to all of Istanbul's famous landmarks, this pass will help you skip the long lines and save money. However, if you ask which one you should buy, it all depends of course on the stay you are planning. Now we will explain what the Istanbul Museum Pass is, what you can and can not do with it, and its main benefits.

What Is the Istanbul Museum Pass?

The Istanbul Museum Pass which is offered by the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism is a well-known card among Istanbul visitors. The Museum Pass is a one-time payment card that provides you access to certain historical museums and cultural points of interest in Istanbul. It is valid for 5 days, starting not with the day of purchase, but from the day of initial use for your first museum entrance.

We must say that you will hear about another Museum Pass named Müzekart+, which gives access to unlimited visits to more than 300 museums and archaeological sites in Turkey, valid for 1 year and with a price of 60 TL; however this card is exclusively for Turkish citizens and foreign residents who have Turkish ID number.

How to Purchase a Museum Card Istanbul?

You can purchase this museum pass from the official Museum Pass Istanbul website. You can buy online, then simply pick up the card with the confirmation from the ticket booths. Alternatively, you can purchase the Istanbul Museum Card at certain museum ticket counters with your ID card. The price of Museum Pass Istanbul is 700 TL.

What Are the Benefits of the Museum Pass?

The most significant benefit is the ease of use. You no longer need to wait in line to get your tickets or queue to enter to visit all the above-mentioned locations. It must be the most important advantage of visiting a city where there is no shortage of crowds at any time of the year.

If you plan to visit all the above-mentioned locations, you will also spend less money for the entrances. However, since the Museum Pass only grants entry to a limited number of locations, if you plan to visit more, you may consider getting an Istanbul Tourist Pass®️ which is more inclusive, offering free access to 85+ top attractions, tours and essential local services with over 80% savings.

Which Touristic Attractions Can You Visit with the Museum Pass?

The areas of interest that Museum Pass presents free access to are

  • Topkapi Palace (including the Harem)
  • Istanbul Archaeological Museums

Here are the information about the places covered by the Istanbul Museum Pass:

Topkapı Palace

It was from this magnificent Palace that the sultans built their empire and ruled one-third of the world until the middle of the 19th century. Construction of the Topkapi Palace began shortly after the capture of Constantinople by Mehmed II. The initial palace was inaugurated in 1465. Then, in the following decades, the palace was enlarged by the various rulers. Topkapi Palace is a must-see in Istanbul. We recommend that you get there early and start by visiting the Treasury and the Harem, as these are the two most frequented rooms....

Hagia-Irene Museum

Hagia Irene Church is the First Church of Byzantium. One of the Roman Emperors, Constantine, while re-establishing the city, had the Hagia Irene Church built in his honor on top of the Roman temples in the 330s. Hagia Irene is the only Byzantine church with an atrium that has remained. The Atrium (entrance) which is a courtyard with a cloister in the midst of ancient Roman temples, is a must-see.

Istanbul Archaeological Museums

It is one of the rare institutions inherited from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic of Turkey. The museum was established in 1869 under the name of Müze-i Hümayun. Istanbul Archeology Museum is one of the largest museums in the world today. There are many different pavilions in the museum complex. The museum made great progress with the appointment of Osman Hamdi Bey as the director in 1881 and the Alexander Sarcophagus, one of the most famous works within the Museum, was included in the museum collection in this period.

Galata Tower

Galata Tower is one of the most precious symbols of Istanbul, located in the heart of Galata district. The old Galata Tower was built by the Byzantine Emperor Anastasius in 528 as a lighthouse. The tower, which was destroyed during the Fourth Crusade, was added to the Galata walls by the Genoese in 1348. It is rumored that the other name of the nine-storey Galata Tower is the Tower of Christ. According to another legend, Hezarfen Ahmet Çelebi, who is mentioned in Evliya Çelebi's Travel Book, was the first person to fly from Galata.

The Great Palace Mosaics Museum

The museum, located in the Arasta Bazaar, was built to include the partially intact mosaic floor in the northeastern part of the cloistered courtyard of the Great Palace of the Byzantine Empire. The mosaics exhibited in the Museum of Great Palace Mosaics, which date back to AD 450-550, are crafted with a unique mastery, containing mythological stories alongside scenes from the daily life of Romans.

Turkish and Islamic Arts Museum

The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts, located in the Hippodrome in the Historic Peninsula, is the first Turkish museum to cover Turkish and Islamic art works collectively. Likewise, you can find the opportunity to examine the contribution of Islamic culture to art here; from not only the Seljuk, Ottoman and Turkish Republic periods, but also from the Umayyad, Abbasid, Andalusian, Fatimid, Mamluk, Timur, Safavi and Ayyubid periods.

Islamic Science and Technology Museum

This museum, located in the heart of Gulhane Park, presents its visitors the inventions of great Muslim scientists, such as the first world maps, mechanical clocks, medical inventions, and compasses.

Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum

Located at the beginning of the slope descending to Yüksekkaldırım in Beyoğlu district, Galata Mevlevi Lodge is the oldest one in Istanbul. It was built in 1491 on the home farm of Iskender Pasha, the governor of the Sultan Beyazid. It is one of the institutions that reflect the culture and art of its period, which exhibits Turkish musical instruments and works belonging to Mevlevi culture, manuscripts belonging to divan poets such as Sheikh Galib who grew up in the Mevlevi Lodge.

Istanbul Tourist Pass has 7 options for validity: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 10 days.
The moment you first use the Pass at an attraction (except the airport transfer), the days of validity start counting down.

The days of the Pass are counted as consecutive calendar days, not 24 hour periods. For example, if you start using a 3 day pass on a Friday, regardless of the time of day, it will be valid for Friday, Saturday and Sunday and will expire on Sunday at 23:59 (11:59pm).
