In 1978, the Turbes Museum came into being in order to connect the efforts of preserving the dead Ottomans and their resting places. Turbes Museum is a set of shrines that host important people like sultans, their families, religious people, and master craftsmen. These shrines are important not only because of the way they were built, but also for what they contain.

It is a well-known fact that during the Ottoman period, architecture was a very important craft. The way a building was built showed the richness of the owner of the building in addition to their status. That is why the shrines, or “turbes” in Turkish, became a means of showing respect to the deceased person lying there. There are 120 shrines within the museum complex, and some of the most important shrines that are connected to the Turbes Museum host Suleiman the Magnificent, his cunning and beautiful wife Hurrem Sultan, and Mehmed the Conqueror who conquered Constantinople. While people mostly visit these shrines to pay their respect to the deceased person or look up to the people who put their marks on history, the Turbes also house important objects like handwritten Qurans, stunning calligraphy panels, or even sacred relics belonging to the prophet of Islam, Muhammed. Another thing that makes the Turbes Museum an important destination in your Istanbul trip is that the majority of the turbes surrounding the museum were designed and built by Ottoman Empire top architects or the most famous architects of their day. The turbes that surround the Turbes Museum represent all eras of Ottoman architecture.
There are many people in the Ottoman Empire that have marked history so greatly that their effects still continue. Even though there is the belief of life after death in Islam, some of the important people of the Ottoman Empire continue to take up space in the world of the living through their breath-taking shrines. 120 of these important shrines are connected thanks to the Istanbul Turbes Museum Directorate, and they are ready to present you important information about their times. You can visit these shrines to see world famous İznik tiles, personal belongings, chests and sacred relics. Make sure to benefit from the advantages of the Istanbul Tourist Pass in your trip to Istanbul, and don’t forget to visit at least some of the most famous of these shrines such as the Turbes of Suleiman the Magnificent and Hurrem Sultan.
